The Summer Room of the Cosmic House, facing south, features furniture custom designed by Charles Jencks to fit the overall symbolic programme. The Sun Table’s surface decoration focuses on a central, flame-coloured disc, the colours and forms of which are derived from close-up photographs of the sun which show it to be a violent, orange mass of flares and explosions rather than a peaceful white globe. The nine planets are painted on both sides of each leg of the table, increasing in size towards the central focus. The wood grain is painted to resemble cosmic elements – swirls of nebulae and spiral galaxies. The Sun Chairs, made from painted mdf, feature rounded backs that represent sunbursts.
